Ubuntu
Linux is currently one of the most popular Linux distributions for its
simplicity and ease of use. This is ideal for new Linux users or for
those wanting to switch from Windows or Mac OS. The CD can either be run
in Live CD mode (runs directly from CD) or it can be installed onto
your hard drive (even a USB
Flash Memory
Drive). Once installed,
additional applications can be downloaded and installed easily.
Ubuntu
is a community developed, Debian Linux-based operating system that is
perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the
applications you need - a web browser, email, presentation, document
and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more.
Ubuntu
Linux uses the GNOME Desktop and Kubuntu uses the KDE Desktop.
Xubuntu
is an official derivative of Ubuntu using the Xfce desktop environment.
It is intended for users with less-powerful computers, or those that
require a highly efficient desktop environment on faster systems.
Xubuntu features primarily GNOME applications. Further details can be
found on the Ubuntu website.
Edubuntu
- for young people. This distribution is aimed at classroom use and
includes many school-related applications installed by default,
including TuxPaint, TuxMath, and TuxTyping, among others. More details can be found on the Edubuntu website.
The Apple Mac version runs on PPC processors (G3, G4, G5, including
iBooks and PowerBooks) and not
Intel Macs. For Intel Macs, the standard Ubuntu versions should be used. Full details can be found on the Ubuntu website.
