Live CDs allow you to run Linux directly from a CD without having to install anything on your hard drive. These are great for checking compatibility with your hardware, or when deciding which distribution of Linux you'd like to install. You can then install directly from the Live CD, if you choose to.

Live CDs are available with the following distributions: 

Mandriva Linux, KNOPPIX Linux, Gentoo Linux, Damn Small Linux, Debian Linux, Ubuntu Linux, PCLinuxOS, openSUSE, Puppy Linux, Linux Mint  

Many distributions now offer a Live CD mode, so please check the specific Linux pages for details.
